A Program Of Masterworks By Beethoven & Shostakovich
Spend a diverting evening in the company of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, led by pre-eminent guest conductor Andrew Litton through a program of masterworks by Beethoven and Shostakovich. Joining the ensemble for a rousing rendition of the former's technically demanding Piano Concerto No. 5 will be electrifying Chinese pianist Zhang 'Zee Zee' Zuo, whose vim and vigour evenly matches the Emperor Concerto's grand piano mastery.
Written in the winter of his life, Beethoven's last ever concerto straddles the divide between the Classical and Romantic musical eras. The boundary-pushing piece opens with serene, gliding chords that embody the composer's mastery of harmony, before giving way to a rapturous finale filled with joyful melodies, flying rhythms and cascading, hypnotic piano passages.
Program:
Beethoven - Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73
Shostakovich - Symphony No. 11 in G major, Op. 103
