Music director of the Colorado Symphony between 2005 and 2008, Jeffrey Kahane and the orchestra's former principal guest conductor Douglas Boyd join forces for a trio of emotionally stirring works by Brahms and Mozart. The program begins with Brahms' aptly named Tragic Overture, a sonata-esque piece brimming with a dark sonority and musical expression that mark it as one of the greatest tragic pieces of the Romantic era.
Kahane will then take a seat at the ivories for a rousing rendition of Mozart's virtuosic and technically demanding Piano Concerto No. 17, before the ensemble brings things to a close with Mozart's iconic Symphony No. 40. Arguably the most popular of the composer's 41 symphonies, it's filled with epic moments and memorable melodies that were immediately popular in his lifetime and still are today.
Opening night: 8 November 2019
