Shining A Spotlight On Modern Composers
Join the Colorado Symphony for an evening of thoroughly modern music. Led by special guest conductor Edwin Outwater of Ontario's Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, the ensemble will play through five works from dynamic composers who are currently creating their own legacy within the classical tradition. As part of the symphony's LISTEN/HEAR series, the programme includes informative talk-throughs, allowing audiences to gain insight into the music's inner workings.
At the centre of the evening lies Mason Bates' Anthology of Fantastic Zoology, a sweeping work that employs sonic effects to trick the ear into believing it's hearing electronic sounds exuding from the acoustic instruments on stage. In this exciting musical menagerie, the violin section ricochets, triggering a wild domino effect that ends when the symphony collapses in on itself. Principal violist Basil Vendryes takes the lead in Owen Pallett's Five Women.
