Donizetti's disturbing opera returns to Opera Colorado
Opera Colorado presents Donizetti's tragic romance in a traditional production that includes full costumes and sets appropriate for its setting in 18th century feudal Scotland. If you're a fan of Outlander on television, this is the perfect opera to get you back into the mood as you wait for season 3! The role of Donizetti's fragile and unhinged heroine Lucia is sung by star soprano Anna Christy, with Spanish-American tenor Eric Barry singing the role of her lover Edgardo. One of opera's most dramatic works, it contains one of the most shocking on-stage scenes ever seen.
Set in the Scottish Highlands during the 1700s, the Ravenswood family has lost its lands to the politically ambitious Enrico. Meanwhile his sister Lucia has fallen in love with Edgar of the Ravenswood clan. However, she is forced to marry somebody else for political gain, whom she murders in cold blood and sheer panic. Separated from her secret lover and forced to marry against her will, her madness is compounded by the fact that she lost her mother not so long ago and finds herself utterly without help. Not for the fainthearted, this opera is a powerful story of murder, betrayal and examination into how women were treated as clan commodities.
