Why See Opera Colorado: The Scarlet Letter?

Classical & Opera

World Premiere

Opera Colorado presents this world premiere from Lori Laitman and David Mason. Based on the classic book by Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter tells the tragic tale of Hester Prynne, a young woman who is branded an adulteress in 17th century puritanical Boston. Marked with a scarlet 'A' on her dress, she is shunned by the community and goes to live on the town's outskirts with her daughter Pearl. Exploring themes of guilt and the danger of collective belief, Hawthorne's story is considered one of the greatest American novels ever written.

A version of this opera was first staged by the students of The University of Central Arkansas in 2008, but has been thoroughly rewritten by Laitman in the years since. Grammy Award-winning soprano Laura Claycolm stars as Hester, while Beth Greenburg directs.
