An Incredible Night at Sweeney Todd

5/5
Erica Jolly from Denver, Colorado
18th April 2016

I wasn't a big fan of this musical, but this production of Sweeney Todd blew me away. The music combo of Devotchka and the principal singers creates a magical evening. Kudos to the vision for this production - the sights and sounds of this lethal London punk fairy tale are unforgettable. Robert Petkoff creates a doomed haunted figure that triumphs in his evil - eventually revealing the humanity of a man mangled by a "Have/Have Not" society. His voice has the power and clarity of an opera singer, and his final moments on stage stay with you. Linda Mugleston is a treasure as Mrs. Lovett, coy, murderous, beautiful, evil and helpless to her own place in the world. Her singing voice is incredible, and the duet between Sweeney and Lovett is hilarious. Joanna is perfectly cast: a lovely ingénue with the beauty of a Renaissance painting and the voice of an angel. The Devotchka music creates a weird gypsy rumble under the Sondheim score: amazing. Be prepared to be moved by this show!
