Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd at Stage Theater

Why see Sweeney Todd?

Denver stars DeVotchka take on the Demon Barber!

In a major departure from their regular Broadway series, Denver Performing Arts have enlisted homegrown music stars DeVotchka to adapt the score and play with the orchestra for a full musical staging of gore-fest Sweeney Todd!

With a rock-infused score, the band behind the soundtrack of Little Miss Sunshine will be putting a new spin on the Sonderheim work, that sees a vengeful barber murder those who wronged him, and with the help of his disturbed neighbour Mrs Lovett, serve them up in meat pies! It's a deliciously gruesome musical with an even harder rock edge with your usual favorite tunes including 'The Worst Pies In London', 'Epiphany' and 'The Ballad of Sweeney Todd'.

What is it about?

Sondheim's murderous comedy masterpiece, set in 19th century London, tells the story of the eponymous demon barber, who returns to the city after wrongful transportation. He has vowed to seek revenge on the judge who committed a heinous assault on his wife, leading to her suicide.

With the assistance of Mrs Lovett, an owner of a pie shop, Todd returns to his trade as a barber. Recognised and threatened with blackmail, Todd kills his first victim, and instantly becomes consumed with a bloodthirsty rage, dispatching further victims through a trap door, straight into the kitchen of Mrs Lovett's pie shop, where she uses the corpses as ingredients for her pies. As the bodies stack up and the pies gain recognition for being particularly meaty, how long will it be before Todd and Lovett's grisly partnership is exposed?

An Incredible Night at Sweeney Todd

I wasn't a big fan of this musical, but this production of Sweeney Todd blew me away. The music combo of Devotchka and the principal singers creates a magical evening. Kudos to the vision for this production - the sights and sounds of this lethal London punk fairy tale are unforgettable. Robert Petkoff creates a doomed haunted figure that triumphs in his evil - eventually revealing the humanity of a man mangled by a "Have/Have Not" society. His voice has the power and clarity of an opera singer, and his final moments on stage stay with you. Linda Mugleston is a treasure as Mrs. Lovett, coy, murderous, beautiful, evil and helpless to her own place in the world. Her singing voice is incredible, and the duet between Sweeney and Lovett is hilarious. Joanna is perfectly cast: a lovely ingénue with the beauty of a Renaissance painting and the voice of an angel. The Devotchka music creates a weird gypsy rumble under the Sondheim score: amazing. Be prepared to be moved by this show! ... Read more
