Obsession, tragedy, and bloodthirsty ambition form the heart of Verdi's take on Macbeth, bringing a taut tale of murder in the Scottish highlands to Opera Colorado this year. With a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave and Andrea Maffei, this thrilling operatic version of the Shakespeare classic premiered in Florence in 1847 and has since become an opera staple. As dark and brooding as you could hope for, don't miss Macbeth!
Thought to have first been performed in 1606, Shakespeare's Macbeth is the story of a Scottish general who receives a prophecy from three witches that one day he will rule all of Scotland. Consumed by the idea, Macbeth and his wife Lady Macbeth do whatever it takes to make the prophecy come true, even if that means blood on their hands. But of course, their actions have consequences and both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are driven into a state of madness before an explosive finale.
