A Romantic Valentine's Day Program
Treat your significant other to the sweeping romance of the most heart-string-tugging music in the classical canon this Valentine's Day! The Colorado Symphony and musical director/conductor extraordinaire Brett Mitchell present a diverse program of works from across the ages, all united by the language of love. 'Scene d'Amour', Bernard Hermann's cinematic masterpiece from Hitchcockian thriller Vertigo, kicks things off with the composer's trademark angular melodies as it narrates a pulse-quickening and emotionally complex scene from the film.
Special guest mezzo-soprano Kelly O'Connor will then take to the stage for the deeply poetic Neruda Songs, a collection of words by Chilean poet-diplomat Pablo Neruda set to a lush score written for the composer's own wife. The romance keeps on coming with David Diamond's Music For Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, a symphonic suite filled with tender moments, light playfulness and butterflies-in-the-tummy type joy. The star-crossed lover's immortal story continues with Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, which include bonafide musical theater classics 'Maria', 'Somewhere' and 'I Have A Love'.
